Categories of Admission

Fully Qualified

Fully Qualified– refers to an applicant who meets the colleges basic matriculation requirements fully

Qualifying

Qualifying- refers to an applicant who possesses at least four (4) of the required subjects needed to fully matriculate into a St. Joseph’s Teachers’ College programme. English Language is mandatory. Eligible applicants of this option will be required to register and pursue the outstanding subject (CSEC, GCE or equivalent) within the first year of their academic programme.

Mature Entry

Mature Entry- refers to candidates over the age of 30 years seeking admission into the college and who do not have the academic qualifications set out in the fully qualified and Qualifying categories of admission highlighted above. 

Mature Entry requirements for Teaching programmes

  1. Must have completed at least 5 years of teaching in one or more recognized schools
  2. Submission of a portfolio which represents competence/accomplishments in the following ways: –
  • A representative sampling of work over the three years immediately preceding application for example lesson plans, weekly plans, class activities, etc)
  • Written 500-word account of life history and a vision of his or her role in education
  • Documentation to substantiate certificates or awards obtained in the informal setting, for example on job courses or awards
  • Two recommendation letters from a professional educator(s) and person(s) who have supervised him or her in his or her area of competence (letterhead and seal/stamp affixed)
  1. Undergo Mathematics and English Language entrance tests
  2. Must possess at least 2 CSEC or equivalent subjects through a formal examination system.

Mature Entry requirements for Non-Teaching programmes

  1. Must possess a minimum of five (5) years of working experience in a specialized area of the Industry, for example; Hospitality, Accounts, Construction and Information Technology. Work experience in the area being applied for is an asset.
  2. Submission of a portfolio which represents competence/accomplishments in the following ways: –
  • Documentation to substantiate certificates or awards obtained in the informal setting, for example on or off-the-job courses or awards
  •  
  • Copy of his or her curriculum vitae/resume
  • Official job descriptions
  • Two recommendation letters from a character and professional referee (letterhead and seal/stamp affixed)
  • Documentation to substantiate community involvement

N.B. Portfolios must be well organized and professionally done and must be submitted along with the general admission documents.
