Programme Overview

The Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education is designed for individuals who want to become training assistants and begin professional training in working with children in the early years (Infant to Grade 3). The programme builds foundational skills in child development, early stimulation, behaviour support, and classroom planning. Graduates are prepared to work as early childhood practitioners in approved institutions, support children’s holistic development and assist with classroom management.

Entry Requirements

Standard Applicants

Applicants must have:

Four subjects with passes at Grades I, II, or III (CSEC/CXC) or Grades A, B, or C (GCE O-Level) (Grade 3 valid from June 1998 onward)

  • English A
  • Mathematics
  • Two additional subjects (except EDPM)

NCTVET Early Childhood Level II or Level III may be used as one of the four additional subjects.

Mature Applicants

Applicants with five or more years of relevant teaching experience may qualify through the Mature Entry Pathway. When applying, mature applicants must submit:

  • Portfolio of evidence documenting professional experience — please request more information by emailing: admissions@sjtc.edu.jm
  • A 500-word Personal Statement outlining educational background, professional growth, and motivation
  • Sit entrance examinations (English & Numeracy)

Supporting Documents

  • Original Birth Certificate
  • Original Academic Certificates (CSEC/CXC/GCE/NCTVET)
  • Tax Registration Number
  • Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
  • Two professional reference letters (signed and on letterhead)
  • One passport-sized photograph (not more than 6 months old)
Important: When applying, copies of birth certificate, marriage certificate and academic certificates must be verified (stamped and signed) by a Justice of the Peace.
