Programme Overview

This programme is for individuals seeking advanced preparation to work with children in the early years (Infant to Grade 3). It focuses on curriculum leadership, developmental assessment, early intervention, and classroom‑management strategies appropriate to young learners. Graduates will be able to design and lead developmentally appropriate programmes, manage early‑childhood classrooms effectively, and take on roles such as lead teacher.

Specialization

Every applicant must choose a concentration in: Mathematics OR Language Arts

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have:

Five subjects with passes at Grades I, II, or III (CSEC/CXC) or Grades A, B, or C (GCE O‑Level) (Grade 3 valid from June 1998 onward)

  • English A
  • Mathematics
  • One Natural Science subject
  • One Social Science OR Aesthetic subject (Physical Education, Drama, Music, Art)
  • One academic subject (except EDPM)

NCTVET Early Childhood Level II or Level III may be used as the academic subject.

Mature Applicants

Applicants with five or more years of relevant teaching experience may qualify through the Mature Entry Pathway. When applying mature applicants must submit:

  • Portfolio of evidence documenting professional experience — please request more information by emailing: admissions@sjtc.edu.jm
  • A 500‑word Personal Statement outlining educational background, professional growth, and motivation
  • Sit entrance examinations (English & Numeracy)

Supporting Documents

  • Original Birth Certificate
  • Original Academic Certificates (CSEC/CXC/GCE/NCTVET)
  • Tax Registration Number
  • Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
  • Two professional reference letters (signed and on letterhead)
  • One passport‑sized photograph (not more than 6 months old)
Important: When applying, copies of birth certificate, marriage certificate and academic certificates must be verified (stamped and signed) by a Justice of the Peace.
