Cost of Course:
The Associate of Science Degree in Social Work is designed to provide training to persons interested in Social Work, to prepare them for work within communities and organizations in order to provide the necessary support needed by Social Workers. This programme also seeks to train suitable candidates to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.
What will you Learn?
At the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate pre-professional problem-solving skills in a helping relationship
- Demonstrate competence in areas of counselling, interviewing, research and data collection
- Display interpersonal skills appropriate for working in Client Services and other Human Services agencies
- Understand the concepts and Principles of human behavior in a social environment
Goal of the Programme
The programme seeks to prepare students with professional knowledge, values and skills for generalist social work practice by creating an environment that offers value-oriented learning that emphasizes self-assessment, service to community, self-determination, social justice and respect for diversity.
Entry Requirements
To matriculate to the programme applicants must fulfill one of the one of the following:
- Pass five (5) or more CSEC/GCE O’ level/Secondary School Certificate (SSC) level subjects including English Language and Mathematics with grades I, II or III/A, B, or C/ National Assessment ranges IV or V. Grade III pass must be afterJune 1998 for CSEC.
Alternative forms of Matriculation
- Pass at least four (4) CSEC/GCE O’ level/Secondary School Certificate (SSC) level subjects and pursue the additional subject within the first year or College/pursue two/three foundation courses as prescribed by the College (conditions apply). English Language is mandatory
- Candidates seeking entry may use NCTVET level 2 to 4 qualifications as one of the 5 subjects required for matriculation, but must also possess CSEC/GCE O’Level/SSC subjects
- Mature Student Entry and Recommended Student membership in the Jamaican Association for Social Workers (JASW)- Applications falling in this category must be over Thirty (30) years old, with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a specialized area of the industry for e.g. Hospitality, Accounts, Construction and Information Technology. Each applicant must submit an academic portfolio for individual assessment. English Language is mandatory.
